Hello,
Thank you for logging on to the Modbury plastic bag free website.

On May 1st 2007, Modbury hit the international headlines as being the first UK town to turn its back on plastic shopping bags.
All of the Modbury traders stopped issuing plastic bags and started selling reuseable, and biodegradable bags instead.
In Modbury it's not just carriers bags, it's All shopping bags.

WWF press release
The Modbury deal is : If a trader puts any product into a bag for a customer, then that bag is not to be made from plastic.
Now, we are working at reducing our plastic packaging in other ways.

We can't really stop the prepackaged items that come into the town, but we can certainly stop what packaging we as traders use and handout.

This campaign is something any community can do, all you have to do is work together to achieve it.

If all of us can do it, so can you!

Every community is different, and your community and traders will be different to the ones found here, so there is no such thing as a Modbury blueprint. However we hope that the information and links we have supplied will inspire and help you.

Each month, more and more towns in the UK are working to become plastic bag free.

Modbury has already had a large number of visits from small delegations wanting their towns to go plastic bag free.
If you wish to see how its working here in Modbury for yourself please feel free to drop by.
The traders are more then happy to answer your questions in person.

Our warmest wishes
and best of luck to you all

The Traders of Modbury.
